A FEW GOOD IDEAS FOR LITERARY/ARTS YEARBOOKS:

The Literary/Arts Yearbook is a unique Class Act Creative product that showcases the art and writing of every student in your elementary school. With a focus on self-exploration through writing and the visual arts, it becomes a wonderful school keepsake and, if produced annually, a record of each student's artistic, literary and personal development from year to year.

Each entry in the all-school book includes a full-color drawing (reduced in size) and a related sentence or two from each student in the school. The sentence may accompany the picture or be part of a collaborative classroom poem.

You may wish all students to provide work based on the same assignment, or teachers may want to choose their own grade-level or classroom assignments.

Here are a few ideas. They may inspire you to others!

INDIVIDUAL ENTRIES

Have students write a sentence describing themselves using adjectives, action verbs or similes and then draw a self-portrait illustrating their words.

  • "I am ____, ____, and ____." ("I am smart, sassy and independent.")

  • "I love to ____." ("I love to go snorkeling in Hawaii.")

  • "Sometimes I am ____ and sometimes I am ___." ("Sometimes I am very serious and sometimes I am as silly as an elephant in a tutu.")

Have students think of an animal they can compare themselves to and then draw a picture of the animal they have chosen:

  • "I am like a ____ because I ____." ("I am like a butterfly because I like to wear pretty clothes and I like to dance.")

  • "I am as ____ as a ____." ("I am as fast as a cheetah.")

Have students write a piece of advice, a personal statement, a goal, or a memory of the school year and illustrate their text.

COLLABORATIVE POEMS

Have students write lines for a collaborative classroom poem and illustrate their line.

Choose a topic that represents something your classroom or school community is working on, cares about, stands for, or wants to promote (e.g., cooperation, kindness, recycling, a specific academic skill, making healthy choices, a holiday, etc.). Give students a choice of sentence frames to work from so you will have both repetition and variety in your finished poem. For example, a classroom that has been working on including specific details in their writing might choose "summer" as their topic and have the following sentence frames to work from:

  • "Summer smells like ____." ("Summer smells like pine needles and smoke from a campfire.")

  • "Summer has the taste of ____." ("Summer has the taste of burnt hot dogs and s'mores.")

  • "Summer is as loud as ____ and as quiet as ____." ("Summer is as loud as the 4th of July and as quiet as a cricket in the night.")

Send us the completed poem, or send the individual lines and we'll compose a collaborative poem for you.

SHARE YOUR IDEAS AND WE'LL PRINT THEM HERE.
