A BRIEF HISTORY OF CLASS ACT CREATIVE

Children's book author Barbara Jean Hicks started Class Act Creative in response to a question she heard from many students: "How can we publish our own books?" After a school visit in Garden Grove, California where students were especially eager to see their work in print, Barbara began to research ways she could make the publication of a bound, trade-quality book of student work available to schools.

The first Class Act Creative student book, Like a Plant in the Sun, was created as a classroom project for a local 3rd grade teacher. The collection of student poetry and full-color self-portraits around the theme of personal identity was such a hit with students and parents, they all wanted copies for themselves. Barbara did more research and found a way to make additional copies available at a reasonable price.

Several weeks later the superintendent of a local school district asked Barbara to develop 4th grade creative writing and art lessons that would tie in with the district's anti-bullying curriculum. The goal was a book of student advice the district could sell to raise funds for further arts programming.

Project Arts RESPECT™ was born. Almost 500 students in sixteen classrooms and six schools took part in this program during the 2008-09 school year, and the best student work will appear in a trade paperback book illustrated with students' black and white line drawings. The working title is Be Wize, Give Love: Kids' Advice on Living Like You Mean It. Check back in late Fall for sample pages of this Wise Words for the World™ book.

The Rio School District will spend every penny of profit from this publishing venture to fund arts programming and other priorities in district schools. To find out how your school or district can create a book of student advice that could sit proudly on your local bookstore shelf and help pay for special programs or equipment, follow the links:
